Stein at 5-1: best UK first-year coaching start since 1913

Put it next to the walk-off: Will Stein is 5-1 in his first season at Kentucky, and UK Athletics noted after the LSU win that it is the best start for a first-year Wildcats head coach since Alpha Brumage also opened 5-1 in 1913.

Stein would not take the comparison bait. Asked about the history — and a mention of Bear Bryant — he shut it down fast: "I have all the respect for Bear Bryant. But I would not consider me Bear Bryant... Just try to be my best every single day and give it my all for this university that took a chance on me and give it all for my players... It's about them. It's not about wins. We are 5-1, which is great. And we got more opportunities ahead."

Those opportunities start on the road. UK Athletics says Kentucky visits Oklahoma next Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on SEC Network. Four straight wins. A Top-10 scalp at home. And a first-year coach writing a line in the record book that had been sitting there for more than a century.
