"Keep doing that": Will Stein, Minchey and the Cats after stunning No. 10 LSU
WATCH: The game-winner
Two straight weeks. Two straight overtime wins. Two straight 35-34 finals. The Will Stein era doesn't do boring, and Kentucky (5-1, 3-1 SEC) just walked off No. 10 LSU at Kroger Field.
Stein had a message for everybody who picked against the Cats: "I'm in shock. We've got a really good football team. People count us out. I took a picture of (ESPN) College GameDay this morning; everyone picked LSU. Keep doing that. It gives us a lot of fuel."
He didn't pretend it was a masterpiece either: "It wasn't pretty. It wasn't perfect. We just kept chopping. We kept fighting."
The winning moment was Kenny Minchey's read. After CJ Baxter punched in a 1-yard TD in overtime, Minchey kept it and walked in for two. "There was nobody in the middle, so I figured I would run there," Minchey said. "We had our play called, and I wasn't necessarily part of it, but that's what my read told me to so I ran it in. It was great."
The numbers that matter:
- Minchey: 23 of 36, 246 yards, 206 of them after halftime
- Baxter: 123 rushing yards and 2 TDs, including a 77-yard run on UK's first snap
- Freshman Kenny Darby (a former LSU commit): 4 catches, 79 yards, including the 22-yard OT grab to the LSU 1
- Brock Coffman: 55-yard punt return TD
- Adam Zouagui: 33-yard field goal with 12 seconds left to force OT after two late misses
- Turnovers: LSU 2, UK 0
And Kentucky did it while missing three linebackers, two defensive backs and a defensive lineman. Per ESPN, it's the first time in school history UK has played two straight overtime games. The Cats fell out of the Top 25 after the South Carolina win; they could jump right back in when the new poll drops.
GO BIG BLUE.
