Kentucky Rifle: Inside One of UK's Quietest Dynasties | Big Blue Times card

When fans list Kentucky's championship programs, basketball comes first and volleyball now comes up quickly. Rifle deserves a spot on that list too. The Wildcats have won four NCAA team championships, and they compete for another nearly every year. Here's a primer on the program, the sport and why the matches at Barker Hall are worth your Saturday morning.

**The titles**
Kentucky won NCAA rifle championships in **2011, 2018, 2021 and 2022**, and it has finished as national runner-up seven times, with 25 top-five NCAA finishes. Few programs in any sport combine that many titles with that many near-misses. It shows a program that is in the hunt every single season.

**How it started**
Kentucky rifle dates to 1982 and has grown into one of the most decorated teams on campus. Head coach Harry Mullins has led the program through its championship era, building a roster that wins as a team and produces individual national champions. Its shooters have earned dozens of All-America honors, a remarkable total for a small-roster sport.

**How a match works**
College rifle matches have two disciplines:
- **Smallbore,** a .22-caliber rifle fired at 50 feet from three positions: kneeling, prone and standing.
- **Air rifle,** fired from the standing position at 10 meters.

Each athlete fires 60 shots in each discipline, and each shot is worth up to 10 points (air rifle can be scored in tenths). A team's score combines its top four shooters in each discipline. The sport rewards calm, consistency and endurance. One flinch can cost a point, and in a close match a point can decide everything.

**Conference home**
Kentucky competes in the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC), which includes several of the country's top programs. Conference matches and the GARC championship are regular tests against the teams Kentucky is likely to meet again at the NCAA championship.

**The 2026-27 season so far**
The Wildcats opened their home schedule against Murray State at Barker Hall. That day, Braden Peiser shot a perfect 600, the highest possible score, as Kentucky won. A week later, UK beat Akron at home in a two-relay dual. Those early wins set the tone for a season that will be measured, as always, against the championship standard.

**Why you should go**
Barker Hall is an easy place to watch elite college athletes up close. Smallbore typically starts at 9 a.m., with air rifle at 11, and the program has hosted fan-friendly match days with the range open to spectators and free breakfast. Scores update shot by shot, so the drama builds through the morning.

**The individual stars**
Rifle is a team sport built on individual performances. Every point counts toward the team total, and Kentucky has produced individual NCAA champions alongside its team titles. A perfect 600, like Peiser's in the home opener, is the sport's version of a perfect game. It takes every shot hitting the center of the target, with no margin for error.

**How Kentucky keeps winning**
Sustained success in rifle comes from recruiting athletes with elite focus and then developing them over four years. Kentucky's coaching staff has built a culture where shooters push each other in practice, which prepares them for high-pressure moments at the NCAA championship.

**The program in one place**
Four NCAA titles. Seven runner-up finishes. Twenty-five top-five finishes. Dozens of All-America honors. A perfect 600 to open the home season.

**Our Take:** Kentucky rifle is one of the best programs on campus by any measure: four national titles, seven runner-up finishes and a steady stream of All-Americans. It doesn't get the attention its record deserves. If you've never watched a match, go to Barker Hall this season and see a dynasty up close.
