Kentucky vs. Tennessee Basketball: The History Behind the SEC Rivalry | Big Blue Times card

Kentucky and Tennessee have been rivals since their first football game in 1893, and the series has carried over to almost every sport the schools play. On the basketball court, Kentucky has usually controlled it. But Tennessee has handed the Cats some of the most painful losses in program history, and the 2025 NCAA tournament added a new one. Here's the history behind the Border Battle.

**A coaching grudge**
The schools first met in basketball in 1910, and for the first couple of decades the series went back and forth. It turned personal in the 1930s and 1940s because of one coach: John Mauer. Mauer had coached Kentucky until the school let him go and hired Adolph Rupp. Mauer took over at Tennessee, and his Vols teams played Rupp's ascendant Wildcats even. Few things fuel a rivalry like a coach facing the school that replaced him.

**Kentucky's long run**
Once Mauer left, Kentucky took over the series. From 1945 to 1960, the Wildcats won 31 of 32 games against Tennessee, including a series-record 20 straight wins from 1950 to 1960. That run lines up with Kentucky's championship era, when Rupp's program won national titles in 1948, 1949, 1951 and 1958. Kentucky still holds a big lead in the all-time series.

**The upset of 1966**
The most famous game in the rivalry may be one Kentucky lost. In 1965-66, "Rupp's Runts" were undefeated and ranked No. 1. Kentucky beat Tennessee 78-64 in Lexington on Feb. 26, 1966. A week later, on March 5, the Cats went to Knoxville at 23-0 to face a Tennessee team that needed a win just to tie for third in the SEC.

More than 7,500 fans packed the old UT Armory Fieldhouse. Tennessee led almost the whole way and won 69-62. Ron Widby, Red Robbins and Howard Bayne combined for 52 points and 33 rebounds. Pat Riley, later a famous NBA coach, led Kentucky with 22. Kentucky reached the national title game, where it lost to Texas Western 72-65, the historic final that matched Texas Western's all-Black starting five against Kentucky's all-white lineup. Kentucky finished 27-2, and one of those two losses came in Knoxville.

**One point in 1972**
In 1972, Ray Mears' Tennessee team had the SEC's best record late in the season. A win over Kentucky would have given the Vols the outright title and the league's NCAA bid. Kentucky won 67-66 after Tennessee missed a free throw in the final minute. The teams shared the title, and Kentucky got the tournament bid on a tiebreaker.

**The 2025 Sweet 16**
For more than a century, the programs never met in the NCAA tournament. That changed in 2025, when they met in the Sweet 16, their third game of the season. Tennessee won 78-65 and reached the Elite Eight for a second straight year. For a rivalry that Kentucky had mostly controlled, losing the first NCAA meeting hurt.

**The women's side**
In women's basketball, the roles are reversed. Tennessee's Lady Vols have dominated the series, though Kentucky made it competitive under Matthew Mitchell. The Wildcats beat Tennessee in back-to-back games for the first time over the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The teams have met in four SEC tournament title games: 1982, 2010, 2011 and 2014.

**The barrel**
Football gave the rivalry its best-known tradition. For years, the winner kept a wooden beer barrel painted half orange and half blue. The schools ended the tradition in 1998 after a fatal alcohol-related car crash involving two Kentucky football players.

**Our Take:** Kentucky's lead in this series is huge, but Tennessee's best moments have come when they hurt Kentucky most: ending a perfect season in 1966 and winning the first NCAA tournament meeting in 2025. That's why Kentucky fans don't treat this as just another SEC game.
