Masai Russell Nominated for World Athletics Athlete of the Year | Big Blue Times card

Former Wildcat Masai Russell is up for one of the biggest honors in track and field. Kentucky Athletics announced that Russell is a nominee for World Athletics Women's Athlete of the Year after what it called "an undefeated, world-record-setting season." Fan voting closed Oct. 17. Winners will be announced at the World Athletics Awards in Monaco on Nov. 29. Here's why Russell belongs in the conversation.

The world record
On Aug. 27, 2026, in Zurich, Russell ran the 100-meter hurdles in 12.09 seconds, breaking the world record (the mark is pending ratification). The previous record was Tobi Amusan's 12.12. Taking three hundredths of a second off a mark in an event decided by fractions is a major jump. It's the kind of number that defines a career.

Undefeated
The world record is the headline, but the full season makes the case. Kentucky Athletics describes Russell's 2026 as undefeated. The 100-meter hurdles is one of the sport's least forgiving events, where one clipped barrier ends a race. Winning every time out takes speed, technique and consistency at the same time.

The Olympic foundation
Russell isn't a one-season story. She won Olympic gold in the 100-meter hurdles at Paris 2024, and 2026 proved that title was the start of a run, not a peak. Following an Olympic gold with a world record is how athletes move from champion to all-time great.

The Kentucky connection
Russell's path to the top ran through Lexington. Kentucky's track and field program has become a pipeline for elite sprinters and hurdlers, and Russell is its most famous recent example. When a former Wildcat sets a world record on the Diamond League stage, it reflects the coaching and development she received in college. Recruits notice that.

How Athlete of the Year works
World Athletics selects its Athletes of the Year through a process that combines votes from its council, the athletics "family" and the public. A nominee is up against the best athletes from every event, sprinters, distance runners, jumpers and throwers alike. Russell's case comes down to two things voters value: a world record and an unbeaten season.

What to watch
The finalists will be announced ahead of the Nov. 29 ceremony in Monaco. Whatever happens, Russell's 2026 already ranks among the best seasons ever by a former Wildcat in any sport.

What sets her season apart
Many great athletes have a record performance. Fewer pair one with a season where they never lose. Russell's year combines both, and it came on the biggest stages in the sport. Showing up against the world's best hurdlers race after race, and winning every time, separates a good season from a historic one.

The competition for the award
Athlete of the Year voters weigh records, championship wins and overall dominance. Distance runners and sprinters often get the most attention, so Russell's case depends on voters recognizing just how rare a hurdles world record is. Lowering that mark is a sign of sustained excellence, and her nomination shows the sport has noticed.

Why it matters to BBN
A former Wildcat contending for the sport's top honor is a point of pride for Kentucky's program and a powerful recruiting message. Young hurdlers can see a clear path from Lexington to the world stage.

Her season in one place
A 12.09 world record in Zurich. An undefeated season. An Olympic gold from Paris 2024 behind it. A nomination for the sport's top individual honor.

Our Take: Russell has the strongest possible argument: a world record, an undefeated year and an Olympic gold behind it. Hurdlers don't often win Athlete of the Year honors over the sport's biggest stars, but this season is exactly what it takes to change that. BBN should be watching Monaco on Nov. 29.
