Otega Oweh's Rookie Season Is Over Before It Started

Former Wildcat basketball star Otega Oweh won't get his NBA debut this season.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced Wednesday night that Oweh had successful surgery on Oct. 14 to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon. Per the team, the procedure was performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, with Thunder medical staff present. Oweh suffered the injury in OKC's preseason game against the Indiana Pacers on Oct. 13, and the Thunder say he will miss the remainder of the 2026-27 season.

It's a gut punch for a guy who did everything right in Lexington. OKC took Oweh with the No. 41 overall pick in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft. In two seasons for Mark Pope, he started 72 games, made back-to-back All-SEC Second Team, and scored 1,255 points as a Wildcat. He tested the draft waters, came back for his senior year, and averaged 18.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals in 2025-26, per KSR/On3.

Our Take: This rookie season is over before it started, and that hurts. But nobody who watched Oweh work at Kentucky is betting against the comeback. He was the steady hand on Pope's first two teams, the guy who wanted the big shot, and BBN will never forget his game-winners against Oklahoma and Santa Clara. Fitting, too, that this news lands on the day the Cats play in Norman, where the New Jersey native started his college career before he found a home in Lexington.

Achilles recoveries are long and they're not glamorous. The Thunder are a contender with a patient front office, which is about as good a landing spot for a long rehab as there is. Heal up, Otega. Big Blue Nation will be watching for the return.
